5 Things Buhari said about senate president, defections

Here are 5 things Buhari said about Saraki and the gale of defections that have hit the APC

President Muhammadu Buhari finally broke his silence on the gale of defections that hit his party, the APC, all through July.

Senate President Bukola Saraki, three State governors and a slew of lawmakers had no squabbles dumping the APC for the PDP.

Many political pundits saw the defections as a sign that Buhari would have troubles keeping a chunk of the base that got him into office at the fourth time of asking.

Speaking during lunch with some APC governors, members of the national and state assemblies and commissioners in his home town of Daura on Thursday, August 23, 2018, President Buhari said he isn’t losing sleep over the defections.

Here are 5 things he said:

  1. Buhari wished the defectors good luck

“For those who have decided to change camp for whatever reason, we wish them good luck,” Buhari said.

  1. The president says the APC government hasn’t lost focus

Some say the APC which promised change during the 2015 electioneering campaigns, has lost its way. Buhari disagrees.

‘‘We are always encouraged when all our constituents are happy with the work we are doing and our genuine efforts to make sure that what we campaigned for in 2015 is still very much in our minds and we have not lost focus”, he said.

  1. President speaks on focus areas

The APC promised to tackle insecurity, fix a broken economy and fight corruption. Buhari says his party still remembers its three cardinal promises.

‘‘In terms of security, economy and the fight against corruption, we have maintained focus”, Buhari said.

  1. Buhari says it won’t be distracted by the PDP

In a series of thinly veiled reference to the PDP and Saraki, Buhari said the APC won’t be distracted by politics from the opposition
